Digital Mac Music in Schools

Students all own iPods or similar MP3 players, digital music is part of their everyday life. They are used to creating their own play lists to share, they Bluetooth ringtones to one another… and of course all of their favourite recording artists use an element of digital music with real instruments. Just how does a school begin to consider introducing digital music creation?

A Built-in Recording Studio - Every Mac comes preloaded with iLife ’08 which
includes Garageband. It’s easy to create a song whether you’re a first-time musician or a seasoned pro. You can record, edit and mix a song exactly as you want it using a range of loops adding effects and adjusting the tempo. But it doesn’t stop there.

Using Real Instruments - Plug your electric guitar or bass into the Mac using a Monster iStudio Link adapter and Garageband recognises it. In the classroom these cables can simply be handed out to the guitarists in the group. They can plug in and play (preferably with head phones) and be jamming and writing without any complex setting up.

For Vocals and Live Recording - It’s just as easy, a USB microphone such as
the Samson C01U Studio condenser just plugs in and again is recognised,
there is no need for expensive pre-amps and in/out boxes. School concerts
and live performances can be recorded via the USB microphone straight into
GarageBand and then burnt to CD in iTunes.

Desktop Drummers - M Audio’s Trigger Finger is a great way to add drums
percussion and sounds to GarageBand. The Trigger Finger offers 16 pressure sensitive pads that can be assigned to both musical notes or drum sounds. The device plugs into your Mac via a USB cable and is host powered. There are no sounds within the unit, it “triggers” the sounds from software.

Traditionally, video editors in search of a soundtrack have had various options such as original composition, commercial music, music loops or library music. Abaltat Muse™ is a video-driven soundtrack composer. This is not a search engine with a large database of library music or music loops. Abaltat Muse™ composes and arranges a soundtrack.

Simply drop a Quicktime file into Abaltat Muse, the software will compose a soundtrack using your selected parameters such as tempo and style. Once the composition is complete, which takes a matter of seconds, you can then proceed with making the arrangement. The user interface has all the features you would expect with any professional editing package. With 5 tracks composed, you can choose not only when and where you want to hear those tracks played but also, what instruments you want played.

Abaltat has joined with two of the leaders in the audio sample production business, Native Instruments and Garritan Libraries, ensuring the highest standard of audio and authentic instrumentation with a natural live feel.
Finished compositions can be exported as .AIFF, .WAV, as a mixed track, individual tracks or as MIDI. Call 01684 291112 for prices.

Regional Training Centres
helping teachers bring the
curriculum to life around the UK

The Regional Training Centre programme helps teachers bring learning to life with digital technology. A nationwide network of Apple-approved Regional Training Centres (RTC) coach primary and secondary teachers in the use of Apple’s awardwinning software packages - giving them the-know-how to enliven school lessons with images, video and sound.

A Teacher’s time should be spent teaching children, but is so often spent addressing technical problems that arise from the use of computers. We are dedicated to supporting Schools and it is our aim to provide a fast and efficient resolution to these problems.

Our specially designed School Support Contract package has been developed as a result of years of experience working in education.

With three guaranteed “housekeeping” visits per year, unlimited telephone support on Mac OS and Mac OS Server issues and unlimited term time access to your Apple Solution Expert Certified Technician, with prices starting from as little as £1,000 + vat per annum, it offers excellent value for money.

The Creative Teacher Today’s teachers recognise how technology can motivate children to learn through exciting and creative approaches to teaching. A generation of “digital natives” has grown up absorbing information from television, computers, video games, mobile phones and PDAs.
Teachers who attend a Free course at a Regional Training Centre will discover that the Mac platform offers robust, stable, easily integrated solutions and that Macs can work seamlessly alongside PCs. Apple technology is famously easy to use, and
beginners can learn quickly and intuitively. With Apple, the technology never gets in the way of the creative process.
